But What About Espresso Royale Democrats?

1205856514The Globe investigated one of those hideous political shorthand arguments that pundits so love to make as they looked into the Starbucks-Dunkin Donuts “phenomenon.” It’s a dubious piece (as one would expect), and it tries to make the case that people who get their caffeine at Starbucks are for Barack Obama, while the Dunkin’ drinkers are for Hillary Clinton, despite the objections of the very first person quoted. Always a good sign for a trend piece.

Naturally, the yuppies who go to Starbucks for their venti lattes are described as people with six-figure incomes who use, gasp, “laptops,” while the Dunkin’ crowd is, of course, full of hard-working, salt-of-the-earth types.

It’s all so tiring.

CNN tried the wine-drinking Obama supporters juxtaposed with the beer-drinking Clintonites to similar effect. Doug Kendall on the Huffington Post compared Obama to a MAC and Hillary with a PC, while Slate went the comedy route with Obama as Stephen Colbert and Clinton as Saturday Night Live.

Let’s see if we can make this clear: White-collar Democrats tend to support Barack Obama, while blue-collar Dems tend to go for Hillary Clinton.

The end.
