Mitt Being Mitt

The economic crisis must be driving Mitt Romney crazy. If the situation had gone to pot a year sooner, nervous Republican voters probably would have overlooked Romney’s flip-flopping in favor of his business experience, and he’d be the one flying to Washington to offer his unsolicited advice to Congress.

But it didn’t happen that way, so Romney has spent the past few months acting as John McCain’s surrogate. And it looks like it’s starting to wear on him.

PolitickerMA reports that Romney has been offering some backhanded compliments to Sarah Palin as he works the talk show circuit. (Emphasis ours.)

“Holding Sarah Palin to just three interviews and microscopically focusing on each interview I think has been a mistake,” Romney said. “I think they’d be a lot wiser to let Sarah Palin be Sarah Palin. Let her talk to the media, let her talk to people.”

Shades of Manny Ramirez!

Palin and Ramirez do have a lot in common. They’ve both started fashion trends—Ramirez inspired a dreadlock cap once he arrived in L.A., and Palin’s glasses are all the rage. Ramirez re-energized the Dodgers fan base, and McCain’s selection of Palin as his running mate re-energized the Republican base. Plus, Palin and Ramirez are both big fans of eBay.

But as much as we loved Manny Ramirez, we never wanted to see him a heartbeat away from the presidency. And the more we consider how many similarities there are between him and Palin, the more nervous we get about her. Say what you will about Romney, and we have (sorry, Aging Cynic), but his prospects for 2012 have never looked better.
