Introducing Air One

Recently returned from Paris, I’m already on the lookout for my next far-flung destination—via non-stop flight, of course (Bostonista has too many hair products to keep checking and re-checking; plus, the $15 bag fees are a drag).

So it was with genuine enthusiasm that we learned Italian-based Air One is starting direct flights from Boston to Milan.

The privately owned airline’s new schedule, which has been operating quietly for nearly a month, was officially unveiled yesterday by Governor Patrick himself. Air One will make the Logan-Malpensa flight five days a week, with departures at 4:10 p.m. (that makes for an early 5:40 landing in Italy).

Planes boast “environmentally friendly” engines, Italian cuisine (in business class only, sigh), and personal TVs. The only thing Air One doesn’t have? Discount fares.

With tickets hovering around $1,200, the new service doesn’t appeal to our spendthrift side. Fortunately, when it comes to taking new trips—and, for that matter, Milan shopping—we’re willing to splurge.
