What's your background, education and training?

Dr. Stephen Goldstein grew up in Stoughton and graduated from Brandeis in 2005 and Tufts Dental in 2009, where he was awarded the Dr. Alfred Osher & Mrs. Suzi Osher Endowed Scholarship for exhibiting the highest degree of personal & professional ethics. Stephen is proud of his continuing education journey at the esteemed Spear Education in Scottsdale, Arizona. He regularly participates in hands-on workshops there, and it excited him to bring back cutting-edge dental techniques to his patients on the South Shore.

What is your typical process for working with a new patient?

Our New Patient Experience is a chance for us to build a relationship with our patients, hear their goals and desires when it comes to their health, and to be as informative as possible as we help fabricate a treatment plan that best suits them. The experience begins with one of our hygienists getting to know our new patient in a comfortable consultation room, asking questions about their past dental experiences, what they hope to achieve, why they’re looking for a new dental home, and their health history. The visit continues with a full set of x-rays and a periodontal evaluation, and includes a microscopic plaque evaluation to show our patients what types of bacteria are present in their particular mouth, which better explains the best methods and treatments to remove it. After the thorough collection of information, our hygienist will introduce our new patients to the dentist, who will have some time to connect with the patient before taking them on a tour of their mouth using the x-rays that were taken, and both intra- and extra-oral cameras. Evaluation of tissue, teeth, muscles, joints, and questions about airway issues such as snoring are part of this comprehensive examination. A treatment plan, which may be phased over time, is then customized to each patient’s goals. We find this informational visit crucial in setting up expectations, allowing our new patients to get acquainted with our philosophy and culture, and making sure we are a great fit for one another!

What inspired your passion for your profession?

I’ve always been very interested in technology and electronic gadgets and all of the amazing things they can do for us, not only to simplify a task, but to make life more exciting! I believe in embracing new technology (once it’s been vetted and improvements have been made) and enjoying the infusion of excitement it can bring to old problems. Dentistry is a profession with ever-changing technology: the materials we use, the kinds of crowns and veneers we can place for strength and esthetics, the shift from goopy impressions to cameras that will take a 3D scan of the tiniest details of the mouth and teeth, and 3D printing and milling of crowns, dentures, night guards, and more. It’s all happening right before our eyes and the path to staying on top of it all, researching the pros and cons, and deciding what’s right for my practice is something that drives my passion. I also really love photography, and seeing my patients notice the tiny details of their new smiles in a high resolution image engages them and makes me a better dentist.

What is the best reaction you’ve ever received from a patient?

Hugs and happy tears are the most moving, but the reactions that really stand out and stay with me for weeks are when, as we walk a patient from the treatment room back to the reception area, he or she says, “that was the most informative dental visit I’ve ever had” or “thanks for explaining every step” or “that was a great experience!” We work very hard at giving our patients a world class experience from start to finish, and when it’s noticed and appreciated, our team gets very excited.

What makes your practice stand apart?

Our passion to help our patients achieve optimal dental health in a clean, caring, comfortable environment is contagious. Our team members are enthusiastic, excited professionals who are committed to each and every patient. We spend time with each patient to listen, inform, and collaborate to best cater to their needs and wishes. We realize that a beautiful, healthy smile builds self-confidence and goes a long way in improving total health.

How many years have you been in business?

Holly Tree Dental has been caring for people on the South Shore and beyond for 44 years, since 1975. I have been at HTD for almost five years; first as an associate, then partner to Dr. Robin Feltoon (who retired in 2018), and now sole owner. Throughout each generation of ownership, the philosophy and culture has carried over via well-timed transitions with proper mentorship and coaching.

What do clients have to say about you?

- From the minute you step into the office of HTD, you know you have entered a culture of "care". As you check in, the smiles begin and carry into the actual exam and doctor visit to the front desk again as you leave. You are included in the discussion about the health of your mouth and allowed plenty of time to ask questions. I cannot say enough good things about this practice.

- From the moment I walked into the dental office I felt relaxed and comfortable! My first intake appointment was very thorough and I was made to feel as though I was an equal part of my dental care! They weren’t just going to tell me what “needed to be done!” I could not ask for a more amazing team which includes the lovely ladies at the front desk, the hygienists and Dr. Goldstein! I didn’t just find a good dental office I found a fantastic one! Now that I’m a mom I can’t wait to bring my little one to Holly Tree Dental for her very first cleaning :)

- Being a patient at Holly Tree Dental was a life-changing experience. I walked in ashamed of my teeth, let alone my smile. Sadly, most of this was due to my neglect. At my first appointment, I was embarrassed to open my mouth for them to see, feeling as though some form of judgment or criticism would be cast upon me. Absolutely none of this occurred. I was welcomed into their office, examined, and promptly told what they could do to help me. It was so comforting to know they not only could help me, but wanted to. To give me the care I needed, multiple appointments were necessary. Not only was scheduling easy, but at every appointment it was clearly explained what we were doing and why we were doing it. Today, I can't stop smiling and my confidence has soared through the roof. I am one-hundred percent serious when I say Holly Tree Dental changed my life. I never thought I would say I looked forward to going to the dentist. But if I'm going to Holly Tree Dental, I look forward to my appointment.
