Dispatches from New York Fashion Week: It’s a Wrap

1221494142Bostonista’s trip down south to catch Fashion Week in New York was brief, but as jam-packed as ever. The trends: Longer hemlines (modesty is back), ultra-sheer anything (but not for long), beige, XL belts, and, obviously, Gossip Girl.

With a disclaimer that we didn’t make it to town in time to catch Marc Jacobs, the favorites:

3.1 Phillip Lim

Spanish-inspired menswear-ish pieces were edgier than Lim’s usual feminine bent, but—no fear!—ruffles, prints, and details abounded. The real standout, however, were the shoes, by Christian Louboutin.

Celebrity sightings: Leighton Meester upstaging Emmy Rossum (as she should, Emmy being about as interesting as a Wasa cracker), Juliette Lewis in a big old fur and Louboutins, First Daughter Barbara Bush, Joy Bryant.

Michael Kors

I’m predisposed to dislike Kors. For one, as a Project Runway judge, he’s whiny; two, there could be, in my opinion, no ickier fashion word than sportswear. But he’s a showman, and his parade of American classics dazzled us with a blur of stripes, polka dots, and gingham, and delivered just the right touch of hope for life beyond recession. And winter.

Celebrity sightings: Blake Lively, Heidi Klum, Joy Bryant, Rachel Zoe

Get it: Gretta Luxe, Neiman Marcus

Zac Posen

For spring/ summer, Posen paired neutral tones with serious embellishment: massive, painful looking earrings; heavy beading, ruffles, layers, fishtails. Sexy, modern, and not too self-serious. Loved.

Celebrity sightings: Leighton Meester (sans Emmy), Lou Doillon, Veronica Webb, Posen BFF Claire Danes, the hardest working celebrity in the front row Joy Bryant, Kate Mara, and, yay, Bette Midler.

Get it: Gretta Luxe, Bloomingdale’s

Betsey Johnson

It’s hard enough to look classy and elegant on your way into a show when you’re literally getting shoved from all sides, and Betsey Johnson’s 9-piece puzzle invitation, which kept falling apart at the slightest wave to security, didn’t help. But the show was well worth it, and that’s because the clothes were upstaged by the props—handcuffs, pirates, doubloons. What’s not to love about a pirate at a fashion show?

Celebrity sightings: Bow Wow (totally), Mark Indelicato (aka Justin on Ugly Betty), Jason Lewis, Kelly Osbourne.
