Milicent Armstrong fell in love with Turkey when she visited during college in 2007. When she returned to the country in 2010, she hit upon an idea that would become her new business. Working with craftsmen and cobblers in Istanbul, the South End resident began designing modern shoes and carryalls made from kilims, or woven carpets. Armstrong launched Artemis Design Co. just last winter, and already local boutiques such as Flock have started selling her distinctive wares. Armstrong says two bags can be made from the same rug, “but they won’t be the same. It’s part of the beauty of using antique kilims.”
