We pride ourselves on caring for each patient as an individual and our multidisciplinary approach to cancer focuses on education of the patient and family, world-class robotic surgery and offering non-surgical options when appropriate.

What’s your background, education and training?

I was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and after undergraduate training as a Biomedical Engineer at Boston University and medical school at SUNY Buffalo, I was trained in general surgery and urology at UMASS Medical School for 6 years. I then spent 2 years as a fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore specializing in minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery.

What is your typical process for working with a new patient?

We work as a team evaluating all new patients. My nurse practitioner Jodi Mechaber or our urology fellow evaluates all new patients including obtaining detailed history and evaluation of prior studies or procedures they may have had. I then meet with the patient personally and again review any further studies, procedures or surgeries that are recommended and answer any questions that the patient and their family might have.

What advice would you give a patient looking to find a provider in your specialty?

Patients, particular cancer patients should feel comfortable with their urologic cancer team and feel as though they have been given proper time and explanation of their problem. Experience matters and patients should feel comfortable asking their surgeon about their training and experience with a particular surgery or treatment program.

What inspired your passion for your profession?

Although I love performing surgery for patients with urologic cancer, watching our patients recover quickly from their stressful events surrounding their surgery and moving on to the activities of their normal life is the single most satisfying aspect of my job. I also have a passion for research into new methods of performing robotic surgery and for teaching our surgery techniques to other urologists through our robotic surgery fellowship.

What treatments are you most excited to offer?

In the past, surgery for most urologic cancers has required large open incisions and long recovery. I am most excited that our program offers minimally invasive surgery to almost all patients with even the most complex urologic cancer problems. I am also proud of our role in offering active surveillance to patients with low risk prostate and kidney cancer who do not require surgery.

What makes your business stand apart?

I believe that spending time educating patients about their choices, offering them the highest level of surgical skill, and helping discover new treatment possibilities through our research program helps us stand apart. Our research into active surveillance for prostate and kidney cancer, quality of life after surgery, and discovering safer techniques in robotic surgery has helped improve our field and in turn has helped our patients over the years.

How many years have you been in business?

12 years as an attending urologic surgeon at BIDMC

What do clients have to say about you?

"Your explanation and understanding of my condition and description of what to expect at each stage of the process was straightforward and clear. You are the leader of a team that combined for what seems like the very best possible outcome. The recovery, to my mind, has been nothing short of remarkable. I’ve had no significant pain since I arrived home the day after surgery and, each day since, I have felt noticeably better and better. When I think of the operation I went through, I have a hard time believing I can feel so good so quickly."

"With my first contact, Dr. Wagner’s office was able to schedule an interview the very next day. At it, Jodi Mechaber spent most of an hour briefing me and answering a host of questions I had, only to be followed by another 45 minutes with both Dr. Wagner and Jodi answering, in all the detail I sought, all my very specific questions relating to various aspects of how the surgery itself was performed, outcomes, and so forth. It was not simply the quality of the detail, but the total candor with which it was related, that truly impressed me. It is ultimately about trusting the individual, I couldn’t think of anyone I’d trust more. I was, and remain, sure I made the right decision. "

"Words cannot adequately express the profound appreciation I feel towards you both. While I know there were many others closely involved in my care and treatment, the two of you lead me through this incredibly emotional and frightening experience. From Dr. Wagner’s expert knowledge and exceptional surgical care, to Jodi’s amazing pre and post-operative assistance leaves no doubt in my mind that I chose the absolute best team in the business!"
