Carey Thomson, MD, MPH is the Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and the Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital, and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Thomson is the Medical Director of the Lung Nodule and Lung Cancer Screening Program and began this multidisciplinary program in 2015. The program includes a unique urgent notification process to the team upon any concerning lung nodule finding on any radiology study in the hospital. Patients have been supported through the process by the team and the nurse navigator who is with them every step of way. Dr. Thomson sees general pulmonary patients with a special concentration in lung cancer and lung nodules. She continues to see patients in the intensive care unit and to mentors residents and students in the area of pulmonary disease. Dr. Thomson leads efforts to improve implementation of lung cancer screening programs. She has presented the success of the Mount Auburn Hospital lung nodule care, screening, and surveillance programs nationally and collaborates with other institutions to improve their care models. She currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Learning Collaborative on Lung Cancer Screening. Nationally, she serves on the American Cancer Society National Roundtable on Lung Cancer, and Co-Chair of the American Thoracic Society/American Lung Association Implementation Guide for Lung Cancer Screening, which was published in 2018.
