Boston Marathon Q&A: JP Gallagher

What did your training regimen look like?
I typically set out a slightly-modified 16-week training schedule based off of the one found on marathonrookie.com. I’ll do two shorter runs and a medium run during the week, followed by a long run on the weekend.
What was the hardest part of training?
This year I got hit pretty hard with the flu, so I missed about three weeks of training while I was going through and recovering from that. The worst part about it was that it happened toward the end of my training, so I missed a good number of my longer runs. I came back just in time for my 20-mile run, so I managed to struggle my way through that. Additionally, this winter wasn’t all that great for running outside, so I hit the treadmill more often than I probably would have liked.
What’s your favorite pre-race (night before) meal?
Some form of pasta with steak.
What is your favorite post-race meal?
Just about anything as long as I can have it with a beer.
How will you stay motivated during the course?
I typically listen to music during these races to keep me going, however, I expect that the crowds will play a big part in keeping me motivated.
Why do you run the Boston Marathon?
The Boston Marathon is such a historical event that I am honored to be one of the many individuals to partake in this race. Both of my parents have run it, and I’m excited to follow in their footsteps and be a part of this for the first time. Being from Massachusetts, this is certainly a marathon I’ve always wanted to run. Additionally, I’m lucky enough to run on behalf of the American Red Cross. I’m so happy to help such a great cause, and I couldn’t have done it without the help from my supporters.
Do you have any racing superstitions?
None that I’m aware of!
What will you be doing the day after the Boston Marathon?
Either working from home or hobbling through the office depending on how my legs are feeling the next day.
