Summer is approaching and school’s almost out, which means your kids will soon be home with three months of long, empty days stretching before them. Make sure they don’t spend it parked in front of the TV with our list of healthy, fun activities for kids this summer.
Beaver Summer Programs and Wellesley’s Healthy Habits Kitchen have teamed up to create a healthy cooking camp for kids third grade and older. The activities change every day, and include everything from Iron Chef competitions to lessons on creating healthy desserts. Can we sign up?
If your child has an adventure streak, Boston Rock Gym in Woburn is offering camps for kids of all ages and skill levels to teach them both indoor and outdoor rock climbing. This is not your typical macaroni crafts day camp, that’s for sure.
Charles River Canoe & Kayak runs a day camp for outdoorsy beginning rowers at its boathouse in Natick. The camp runs for five sessions which can be taken as either full- or half-day chunks. Fun fact: The company also does daily canoe and kayak rentals for casual paddles down the Charles.
The Salvation Army-run Kroc Center—a community health, fitness, and recreation center that features a jealousy-inducing indoor water park—runs a summer “enrichment” day camp for kids. Activities are varied and include (of course) playing in the water park, taking hip-hop dance classes, basketball, rock climbing, swimming lessons, and more. Plus, the Salvation Army is an organization we’re always in favor of supporting.
This camp focuses on exposing kids with attention deficit disorder, respiratory diseases, and autism to nature, right in the middle of the city. On any given day, campers could be gardening, exploring the outdoors, or going on nature-oriented field trips. It’s a great way to ensure your child will actually enjoy some fresh air this summer.
Let your child live out his or her baseball fantasies with a camp run by the Sox. In addition to baseball instruction, campers will get to meet a current Red Sox player and get an official tour of Fenway Park. The camp is open to kids ages 5 to 13.
This week-long camp is run by Health Yoga Life and teaches youngsters about yoga, wellness, breathing, and relaxation. For every eight campers, there will be two certified yoga instructors.
