Some yogis dream of practicing in a Buddhist temple in India, or finding zen at a yoga retreat in Thailand. Not us. There’s hallowed ground much closer to home: Fenway Park.

Someone in the Red Sox Foundation’s office is a genius. They took the most spiritual workout around (yoga) and decided to bring it to the most spiritual place in town (Fenway). Sorry religious institutions, Fenway Park is non-denominational.

The Red Sox Foundation is hosting the first ever yoga classes at Fenway Park on September 23rd for two sessions (7 a.m. and 6 p.m.). Proceeds for the event, which is co-sponsored by Equinox and New Balance, will go to Red Sox Scholars Program which provides college scholarships, tutoring, and mentoring to talented, but financially disadvantaged Boston public middle school students, and to the RBI Youth Baseball and Softball Program, which serves more than 2,000 inner city teens each summer using baseball to promote healthy life choices.

The event is capped at 222 participants. And no, unfortunately, the yoga classes will not take place in the outfield (darn). Yogis will be spread out along the warning track and we were told by the powers that be, “they’ll have Red Sox Foundation mats down which guests will then be able to put their mats on top of.” So that way, your yoga mat won’t be covered with outfield dirt. (Although, didn’t they sell Fenway dirt a few years back? So for the true fans, it’s an extra souvenir.) The classes are geared towards all levels of experience, and in order to sign up, you have to raise (or give) a minimum of $250 for the foundation.

Instructors, like Omgal’s Rebecca Pacheco, teach yoga at Equinox.
