Free Fitness Classes To Return In June

If the snow is getting you down, remember that spring is on its way. Eventually.

We all know by now that Boston is consistently ranked in the Top 5 when it comes to “fittest cities” lists. One of the reasons that the honor is bestowed upon our historic city (a city that the New York Times recently said was “sparkling,” calling it, “… one of the most successful urban renaissance stories in modern American history”) is because of our incredible number of free fitness classes held in the summer months. While we hope all of the options return for 2014, we can confirm on this snowy Wednesday that one park offering free classes is already on the books.

Post Office Square will once again host its free fitness classes starting in June. (If you close your eyes, you can almost feel the sun on your face.) Coordinator, Kendall Covitz, who also teaches free yoga classes in the park, says that classes will return in early June and end in late-September. “That’s a month longer than last year,” she says. “We were so successful.”

Covitz says that the details are still being worked out, but she can confirm that there will be eight classes a week featuring Pilates, yoga, Zumba, bootcamp, and a yoga/barre combo.

This summer’s program will take more of a full-body wellness approach. In addition to her yoga certification, Covitz is also a certifed holistic nutrition coach who created the uber-popular Kendall Clean program. She’ll be hosting five or so free nutrition “brown bag lunches” where everyone brings their own lunch, sits on yoga mats in the park, and chats about food and health.

“My [yoga] classes grew over the summer,” Covitz says. “People were shocked that this free resource was available. I had a lot of people coming in groups, even sorority sisters from Missouri who were interning in Boston were coming every week. In some classes we had 40 people show up!”
