It’s that time of year again: The Shamrock Shake has made its triumphant return to McDonald’s. While these green treats may seem like the perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, it shouldn’t be shocking that they’re extremely high in calories, fat, and sugar—even a small contains a whopping 73 grams of sugar.

This year, skip the trip and make your shake at home. This healthy Shamrock Shake-inspired recipe contains only five ingredients and is dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan. If you want to add some additional greens to the recipe, swap out the mint extract for 1/4 to 1/2 cup real mint. The leaves should provide enough mint flavor and add more green color.

Ingredients
Serves 2

1 ripe avocado
2 frozen bananas
1 can coconut milk
2 tsp mint extract
1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions

Pour the can of coconut milk into the blender and add the frozen bananas, mint, and vanilla extract. Cut the avocado in half and remove the pit. Add both halves into the blender.

Blend the shake until creamy. Enjoy in a glass, or pour into a bowl and top with granola, coconut, or fruit.
