This Is What a Running Coach Eats for Breakfast

Dan Fitzgerald, co-owner of Heartbreak Hill Running Company, fuels up with one mean breakfast sandwich.

We don’t need to tell you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In this series, we ask local notables for a sneak peek at how they start the day.

Claim to Fame: Fitzgerald, a former Boston College track star, is now the co-owner and founder of Heartbreak Hill Running Company. In addition to leading the store’s run club, he coached more than 500 runners competing in this year’s Boston Marathon.

What he ate: An egg sandwich made with sourdough bread, arugula, two eggs, goat mozzarella, avocado, salt, pepper, crushed red pepper, and Dijon mustard.

Why he chose it: Fitzgerald may make one mean breakfast sandwich, but he says that’s where the kitchen skills end. “This represents the sum total of all of my culinary skill—it’s actually the only thing I cook outside of frozen pizza,” he says. “Breakfast for me is always in front of the computer prepping workouts for my athletes, or wrapped up to-go. Always on the move!”
