Marathon Monday may be the main event, but Boston is already abuzz this Patriot’s Day weekend.

From the John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo to retail pop-ups galore, the city is celebrating the marathon all weekend long. And on Saturday, the BAA gave spectators and athletes a taste of what’s to come, with its annual 5K, invitational miles, and kids’ relay challenges.

In the 5K, New Englander Ben True broke his own American record by two seconds, speeding in for the win with a time of 13:20. Ethiopia’s Buze Diriba took the women’s race with a time of 14:54, followed closely by Rhode Islander Molly Huddle at 14:56.

Later in the day, New Zealand’s Nick Willis ran a 4:14 to win the men’s invitational mile, while Canada’s Nicole Sifuentes won the women’s contest in 4:33.
