By the time country star Eric Paslay hit the Patriot Fest stage on Saturday, he had already treated a lucky group of fans to a much more intimate show.

Paslay serenaded a group of 15 Joslin Diabetes Center patients, all of whom have type 1 diabetes, during a private performance before the main event on the Lawn on D.

The singer himself was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10. Besides singing for the patients and their parents, he chatted with the group and even compared glucose numbers with a few children. One patient asked him what it’s like to live on the road with diabetes.

Peter Amenta, president and CEO of Joslin Diabetes Center, says he was grateful for the experience.

“We not only got to enjoy some of our favorite Eric Paslay hits in-person and take him on a tour of our pediatric department, but he really took the time to get to know our patients and bond with them about his own experiences living with type 1 diabetes,” Amenta says. “It was a very special day for all of us.”
