Even though we might still all be wearing our winter coats today, on the official first day of spring—with each degree increase on the thermostat and minute of light we get back in the evening—the promise of warmer days seems just around the bend. And with the promise of warmer days comes the promise of free outdoor fitness. Although this multi-faceted outdoor fitness event on the Esplanade is more of a celebration to close out the Esplanade Association’s winter outdoor workout series—it could also be seen as the preview celebration of what’s to come.
On March 31, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., join the Esplanade Association at the DCR Hatch Shell for a warm-up workout, 3k fun run, and silent disco to celebrate the end of the association’s Frost Fit Winter Series in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield. The series, which took place every Saturday morning in February, featured a workout lead by November Project leaders and incorporated everything from running to high intensity body weight exercises.
The event on March 31 will start with a warm-up workout lead by November Project on the Community Boating Inc. docks. Technically, the boat house doesn’t officially open until April 1, but a special regatta will be going on during the event so look for white sails. Right now this portion of the morning is sold out, due to limited room on the docks, but if you’re interested check back—spots might open up.
After your muscles are warm and limber Adrianne Haslet—runner, Boston Marathon bombing survivor, and globally recognized speaker—will kick off a fun run that will begin and end at the Hatch Shell. Haslet, who lost her leg in the bombing had plans to run this year in the Marathon before they were sidelined after being struck by a car in Back Bay. Even though she won’t be able to run 26.2 miles she’ll still be racing in some capacity in the B.A.A. 5k. Her journey back to the racecourse, throughout tremendous adversity, via Instagram is pretty inspiring.

When you are grateful it is impossible to feel bad in a sport where discomfort is a guarantee. I crushed my run today! I forgot to charge my Garmin, but I don’t need numbers to validate this feeling. I’m so grateful to be back to what I love! ONE MONTH FROM TODAY I’ll be crossing the finish line at the B.A.A. 5K! #bostonstrong #adriannestrong #bladerunner
And to close out the morning, at 11 a.m. you’ll be able to shake and shimmy any remaining energy you have left in a silent disco with a live DJ. Plus, the first 400 participants will receive a free Frost Fit series tank top—as if we needed any other reason to long for warmer weather.
Free, March 31, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Community Boating Inc., 21 David G Mugar Way, Boston, eventbrite.com.
