A Paradise for Mothers Is Coming to the North Shore
This mommy lounge comes with childcare, fitness classes, and even a concierge service.
Finding a moment to yourself when caring for a child (or children) is nearly impossible. Not to mention, it can be even harder to accomplish menial tasks you might have taken for granted pre-baby. This mom’s clubhouse, called A Mom’s Village, is giving mothers in the North Shore their sanity and wellness routine back one fitness class, nap time, and pre-made healthy meal at a time.
Cindy Solomon and Stephanie Keohan, friends and business partners, began A Mom’s Village back in 2016 to fill a void they were experiencing in their own lives. When their local gym closed, which offered childcare, they were left with virtually no option to both workout and have their little ones cared for. As a result, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They rented out space in a dance studio in Wakefield and hosted fitness classes and offered childcare.
“We would wheel all our equipment out from a storage room everyday, set-up, and then wheel it all back at the end of the day,” Keohan laughs. “While we did this day-to-day we were actively working on finding a space to call our own.” About a year later the duo moved into a temporary pop-up space in West Peabody. Located at the Big Y Plaza outdoor shopping center, A Mom’s Village was born.
After conducting thousands of surveys with moms and refining their offerings, the women built a strong community around the mission to make the demands of motherhood easier. And on Wednesday, they are celebrating the grand opening of their permanent 7,600 square-foot clubhouse just a couple doors down from the pop-up.
“Many of our offerings started as sort of a joke,” Keohan explains. “Mom’s would ask ‘Can you get me a nap?’ or ‘Can you put dinner on the table?’ And we delivered on these requests.” Along with an extensive line-up of fitness class offerings like yoga and barre, A Mom’s Village provides childcare, showers, a lounge for napping or just a moment to yourself, and even a concierge service so you can order healthy meals to take home with you.
Childcare at the clubhouse isn’t like your typical daycare either. Kiddos are supervised in properly outfitted play spaces and follow a curriculum to learn about music, art, and sharing. Keohan says she has some moms tell her that their children beg to go to the gym so that they can play. Makes it really hard to miss a work out then, doesn’t it?
Companies like this one, and other corporate businesses, are recognizing the need for more offerings like these. It’s an important aspect of wellness because the needs of a mom can be different and change as the needs of their child change. It truly does take a village to raise a child.
“Your life really changes after you have kids,” Keohan says. “There are a lot of great support groups and things like that online for mothers but there wasn’t really a place for them to go. A Mom’s Village gives them that. We just know how important that little bit of ‘me’ time is when you’re a mom. It can make all the difference.”
