Feel Better with These Seven Healthy Hangover Cures

By ·

While we’re not encouraging drinking alcohol in excess, we’ve probably all been there before—waking up with a pounding head, feeling nauseous, and wanting to crawl back into bed for the remainder of the day. To cure hangover woes, some people turn to IV therapy, while others chug water and swear by a greasy breakfast sandwich.

Unfortunately, there is no “miracle cure” for hangovers, but if you’re not feeling the greasy food, there are some simple recipes that will help fast-track the road to recovery. Loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and complex carbs, these healthy hangover cures will help you feel better in no time.

1. Coconut Water Smoothie

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it makes you urinate more frequently than normal. It can also cause dehydration, leading to a loss of electrolytes. This smoothie contains coconut water, which has natural amounts of electrolytes, as well as kale, pineapple, and banana.

2. Make-Ahead Breakfast Sandwich

Make a batch of these breakfast sandwiches ahead of time to prepare for your next morning hangover. Eggs contain B12, which is another vitamin that can be lowered while drinking, while the English muffins can help settle your stomach. You also get an extra dose of vitamins and minerals from the kale. Stock these in the freezer and you’ll be good to go for your next night out.

3. Homemade Ginger Juice

If you feel nauseous after drinking, this juice will help. Ginger can settle your stomach and help regulate your digestive tract. To make this ginger juice, you don’t even need a juicer, so everyone can make it. For a healthier version, try swapping the white sugar with honey.

4. Avocado-Eggs

It’s completely normal to have a craving for greasy, fatty food after a night of drinking. Instead of something greasy, try these avocado-eggs, which are made by baking some eggs and bacon into a hollowed out avocado. You can make this recipe your own by using vegetables instead of meat, adding tofu, or adding a bean of your choice.

5. Two-Ingredient Banana Pancakes

If you’re craving carb-filled pancakes, this version tastes the same but is much easier to make. All you need are two large eggs and one medium-sized banana. Bananas contain potassium, which is one of the electrolytes that can be lost during dehydration, and the eggs supply a healthy dose of vitamin B12.

6. Coffee Banana Smoothie

Waking up after a night of drinking can be difficult, to say the least. This smoothie can help give you that boost of caffeine you need, while also providing nourishing ingredients, such as bananas, oats, and chia seeds. Fiber is especially important after drinking to help your digestive system, and this smoothie provides plenty of it.

7. Healthy Baked Banana Berry Oatmeal

If you have an upset stomach, the oats in this recipe can help settle it. Berries provide antioxidants, which may help lessen the side-effects of a hangover. The oatmeal does take about 40 minutes to cook, so if you’re planning on having a busy weekend, you may want to prepare this ahead of time.
