More than 550 supporters of the New England Center and Home for Veterans (NECHV) attended the 17th Annual Leave No One Behind Gala this weekend at the Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center. The event raises money for the center which serves more than one thousand female and male Veterans each year who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The Gala honored several local heroes including Newton Gold Star Mother Nikki Likely for her service to Veterans. Also honored was Air Force Veteran Charlotte Doherty – who once resided at the Center and is now firmly back on her feet and working to support fellow Veterans in need of services. Haverhill’s WWII Hero John Katsaros was honored and recounted his experience of being shot down over France, captured and rescued – he tells his tale in his book, “Code Burgundy: The Long Escape.” The evening also included a special performance by singer-songwriter and Navy Veteran, Sailor Jerri.
The Center works to support Veterans by helping them to secure stable housing, meals, providing support to secure long-term employment, medical services, etc. The night was expertly emceed by NBC 10 Boston/NECN anchor Latoyia Edwards. Other notable attendees included NECHV President and CEO Captain Andrew McCawley, USN Retired, NECHV Board Chair Beirne Lovely, and Seaport Hotel VP and GM Jim Carmody, who was one of the founders of the Gala dinner.
