The MassArt Museum Grand Opening

The MassArt Art Museum (MAAM) celebrated its opening week with a special preview event for donors and dignitaries on Thursday, February 20 prior to its grand opening day on Saturday, February 22. Governor Charlie Baker, Secretary of Education Jim Peyser, MassArt President David Nelson, MAAM Executive Director Lisa Tung, Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos,Ambassador of Portugal Domingos Fezas Vital, and Dr. João Pedro de Vasconcelos Fins do Lago and the Portuguese Consulate of Boston welcomed over 300 people to a private preview reception and sneak peak at MAAM’s inaugural exhibitions: Valkyrie Mumbet by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos,Game Changers: Video Games and Contemporary Art, and Yesterday is Here, a site-specific installation in the museum lobby by artist duo Ghost of a Dream. On Saturday, February 22, MAAM welcomed over 2600 people to the new museum forits opening festivities which kicked off with a ribbon cutting led by Boston City Council President Kim Janey, District 8 Boston City Councilor Kenzie Bok, MassArt President David Nelson, MAAM Executive Director Lisa Tung, MassArt Trustee and Alumna Elisa Hamilton, MassArt Student Trustee John Intoppa ’23 and MassArt Student Governmen tAssociation President Kathleen Hernandez ’21. The day continued with behind-the-scenes tours of the preparator’s workshop, exhibition tours of Valkyrie Mumbet, art making activities in the Barkan Family Big Ideas Studio, aerialist performances, and an evening party with music by DJ Dayglow. Special guests included Game Changers artists Skawennati, Tracy Fullerton, Dan Hernandez, Juan Obando, and Momo Pixel; MAAM branding team Tammy Dayton, founder and principal of Moth Design, and Shawneric Hachey of 43,000 Feet.
