The Silent Bat Defense

1190654007Boston Daily favorite Jose Offerman is back in the news after the erstwhile Mo Vaughn replacement pleaded not guilty to charges that he attacked two players in an Atlantic League game earlier this summer. In case you missed it, Offerman—who had been toiling for the Long Island Ducks—took umbrage to getting nailed by Bridgeport Bluefish pitcher Matt Beech. Bat in hand, Offerman charged the mound to get a piece of Beech. That’s when things got a little dicey.

In the ensuing fracas Beech wound up with a broken finger and Bridgeport catcher John Nathans earned a concussion after coming to the aid of his battery-mate. We’re not lawyers but we imagine that the fantastic photo snapped by Connecticut Post photog Christian Abraham is likely to be Exhibit-A for the prosecution.

Offerman’s attorney Frank Riccio has said he does not believe his client struck the players with a bat.

Here is where we make the cheap joke about Offerman and his inability to hit anything with a bat. We know. We’re so predictable.
