Jordan’s Furniture is Feeling Lucky

1206381194We’ve never kicked ourselves harder for not buying a new couch than after the 2007 World Series. Back in April of last year, dedicated Red Sox fans in need of furnishings bought what they needed at Jordan’s Furniture with the promise that if the Sox won the World Series, they’d get the stuff for free. And we all know how that went down.

It seemed that the insurers who protected Jordan’s didn’t completely go bankrupt in 2007. The furniture store revealed today that’s it’s reviving the promotion for 2008.

It is a little different, however.

Customers who buy certain furniture pieces in April will get refunds if the Red Sox win the 2008 World Series in a sweep.

Not all furniture items are included, just sofas, sectionals, dining room tables, beds, and mattresses. Rugs were added to this year’s “sweep” theme. The promotion starts Tuesday March 25 and ends April 27.

Hmm. Our couch is a little less comfy than it used to be. Let’s weigh the pros and cons here.

Pro: History is on our side, since both the 2004 and 2007 championships were completed in sweeps.

Con: History also has it that the Sox don’t win back-to-back World Series very often. (They did it once, winning both the 1915 and 1916 championships.)

Pro: The team is largely the same as last year, so they must have a chance, right?

Con: Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling, and Mike Timlin are all injured.

Pro: We don’t get taxed on the stuff we win.

Con: If they lose, we have to pay for the entire purchase, plus sales tax.

Pro: Either way, we get a new couch.

Con: But a couch is infinitely better when we don’t have to pay for it.

We’ve got a month to think about it. Let’s see how the Japan games go and maybe we’ll part with a few hundred bucks in the hope that lightning strikes twice.
