Harvard Square Is No Longer Burning

1209742985Early this morning, Harvard Square was all aglow with an underground fire that sent flames shooting out of manhole covers like in an action movie. But don’t head over in hopes of getting some apocalyptic pictures to put on your MySpace profile. Authorities say the fire is out and repairs will begin shortly.

As is this week’s custom, it was the relationship between stuff under the ground that got the problem started.

An explosion in an underground utility tunnel ignited some oil, sending flames shooting out of a manhole 10 feet into the air, [Deputy Fire Chief James] Burns said.

Bus service is back to normal in the Square, and Mass Ave is open to traffic again. Feel free to go about your business once more.
