Michelle Guerette Rows Closer to Gold

In this month’s issue of Boston magazine, we profiled Michelle Guerette, the Cambridge rower who hopes to win a gold in the women’s open-weight single scull competition at the Beijing Olympics.

We’re happy to report that Guerette has advanced to the semifinals.

In a press release from the Head of the Charles Regatta, the 2005 Head of the Charles Champion of reports that she felt good during her heat.

“It wasn’t an easy race, but I felt like at the 1,000 [meter mark] it had the potential to be under control,” Guerette said. “But, it’s the Olympics and nobody mellows out at the 1,000 even if they are up on the pack. It was definitely a push all the way to the finish as everybody wants that top seed.”

Ekaterina Karsten-Khodotovich of Belarus, who is considered to be the woman to beat, also won her heat. The semifinals will be held on Wednesday.
