Follow that Bird!

Fred the Somerville Turkey has been laying low for the past month, and I don’t blame him: He’s probably hiding from the locavores salivating for free-range bird.

The handsome turkey’s been lurking in the neighborhood north of Porter Square since July — a rare sight for us urban folk — and he’s got quite a following. Indeed, when I bumped into him on Cedar Street on a morning run in September, a passerby on her way to the T told me about Fred, his Facebook page (where residents track his whereabouts), and his theme song.

Yes, his “PR rep” and local resident Rachel Leah Blumenthal and pals recorded a lilting little ditty about the doings of our feathered friend, complete with flute and ukulele. Apparently, Fred winged in from Albuquerque and is now a staunch Somerville booster.

Here’s an excerpt:

Fred, Fred, the Somerville Turkey
Just flew in from Albuquerque
Feelin’ fresh and oh so perky
Gobblin’ round our town

Walking down Porter Street
Flapping those wings, tapping those feet
Looking much too cute to eat
Whistlin’ a happy tune

Eating some Fluff to stay real strong
Atop Spring Hill Fred sings a song
The neighborhood dogs like to bark along
With their new turkey friend

The popular Fred has 300 friends on Facebook and if he keeps it up, he might just end up on Mashable’s “10 Animals With More Social Media Fans Than Major Media Outlets” list.

In the meantime, I’m sure he’ll be happy to know that I will be having a vegan Thanksgiving with my inlaws. Gobble, gobble.
