Parts of the North End Flooded on a Friday Night

Parts of the North End began to flood on Friday night, and it took a few hours for city officials to try and stop the excessive water overflow that came from a main break.

According to a spokesman from the Boston Fire department, crews responded to the intersection of Stillman and Endicott Streets around 7:22 p.m. in the North End for a “large water main break” that spilled into the roadways and flooded into nearby basements. Officials said the Boston Water and Sewer crews spent some time looking for a shut-off valve to try to contain the flooding as members of the fire department monitored the situation.

“Water and sewer crews [slowed] down the water break with shut-offs. Most [of the] water [was] flowing along [the] streets between curb stones into sewers,” said Boston Fire Department Spokesman Steve MacDonald via Twitter.

MacDonald said the Fire Chief requested the city’s electrical inspector to come to the scene because of a concern with the intense amount of water possibly spilling over and getting into basements adjacent to water main break. It was still an active scene in the North End around 10 p.m., nearly three hours after officials initially responded to the flooding.
