Bulger Day 26: Flemmi Calls Bulger a Pedophile

It was a grim and combative day of cross-examination in court.

So Whitey Bulger’s on trial and you’re interested in hearing about it, but you’ve got this darn day job and you can’t manage to keep up with all the live tweets. We feel you. Here’s what you missed. (Past coverage here.)

The cross-examination of Stephen Flemmi began where it left off yesterday, with Whitey Bulger’s lawyer Hank Brennan peppering him with questions about the gruesome murders of Debra Davis and Deborah Hussey, the first his girlfriend, the second his stepdaughter in a common law marriage. It was, thus, a fairly grim and combative day in court.

Flemmi was defensive and upset by most of the questioning, during which Brennan pointed out inconsistencies in the various testimonies Flemmi has given about these murders over the years. But he was never more so than at the suggestion that he molested Hussey, who was a toddler when Flemmi first moved in with her mother Marion and called him “Daddy” growing up. Flemmi admitted yesterday to having oral sex with her, but he maintained that it was consensual. “You want to talk about pedophilia — right over there at that table,” Flemmi replied, gesturing to Bulger, whom he accused of taking a 16-year-old girl to Mexico. Bulger (uncharacteristically) kept his cool at the accusation.

Flemmi didn’t deny his role in both murders, but constantly corrected Brennan to point out that he didn’t physically commit them. Brennan at one point held up an image of Hussey’s skull to refresh Flemmi’s memory about pulling out her teeth. “I don’t want to see that,’’ Flemmi answered. Does anyone?
