The Six Richest People in Massachusetts, According to Forbes
Forbes has released its annual list of the 400 richest Americans and surprise, surprise, the six wealthiest people in Massachusetts are … mostly the same people who made the list last year. Hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a fortune that can rival Bob Kraft’s. They are:
- Abigail Johnson, the president of Fidelity Investments, worth $17.2 billion. She lives in Milton, and she’s 23rd on the list overall.
- Abigail’s father, Edward C. Johnson III, worth $9.3 billion. He’s the CEO of Fidelity, he lives in Boston, and he’s 44th on the list overall.
- Jim Davis and family are together worth $3.1 billion. Davis is the chairman of New Balance, he lives in Newton, and he comes in at 161 on the overall list.
- Amos Hostetter, Jr., worth $2.9 billion, made his money in cable television. He lives in Boston and comes in at 184th on the Forbes list.
- Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, is also worth $2.9 billion. He lives in Brookline and also ranks 184th on the overall list.
- Phillip “Terry” Ragon, founder and CEO of InterSystems, a seller of electronic health records, is worth $1.5 billion. He lives in Boston and ranks 352nd on the Forbes list.
So what’s changed since we played the look-at-all-these-wealthy-people game last year? Well, the rich have by and large gotten richer, in Massachusetts and on the list more broadly. “The average net worth of list members is a staggering $5 billion, $800 million more than a year ago and also a record,” Forbes writes.
And their rankings relative to one another have moved around a bit. Abigail Johnson was allegedly worth just (just! ha.) $11.8 billion on last year’s list. Her jump to $17.2 billion has moved her from 27th on the list overall to 23rd. Jim Davis’s family has jumped from fifth in the state to third. And Bob Kraft, who was fifth, has caught up to Amos Hostetter, to tie him for fourth this year. That makes room for Terry Ragon, a newcomer to the 400, to take fifth place. Congrats, Terry. Your wealth is nearly equal to the gross domestic product of Djibouti. Welcome to the list.
