DrinkIn: MIT Grads Launch Alcohol Delivery Service in Cambridge

Cambridge residents, and MIT students, can now get beer delivered to their door by bike.

Three MIT graduates launched DrinkIn on Monday, a website that allows users to order drinks online, and have them dropped off by “good ol’ human energy.”

“[We] strive to be the most eco-friendly delivery company ever! Our bikers will get through the city quickly, so don’t worry about ordering during rush hour either,” according to the company.

Pablo Bello, one of three founders of DrinkIn, says the team plans on sticking to parts of Cambridge—specifically in the 02139 area—for now, but they will expand in the coming months. “It’s already all hands on deck. It’s a little hectic. Right now it’s very small, it’s almost like a Beta launch. We are thinking of it as on a rolling basis, and letting a certain amount of users sign on,” he says.

The delivery service is offered Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bello, who started the company with two fellow MIT graduates, says DrinkIn is working exclusively with Libby’s Liquor Market in Central Square, until they think about their expansion plans. Boston isn’t part of the launch just yet, but in the next few months, based on how well DrinkIn does, Bello and crew want to start pedaling over the Mass. Ave bridge to reach out to a different branch of customers looking to have alcohol dropped off at their door.

“Cambridge for now, and then Boston later on, possibly on Beacon Hill,” says Bello, adding that they picked Cambridge because of its close proximity to the school they attended, and the abundance of accessible bike lanes.

Right now, customers can only order drinks through DrinkIn’s website, but the team has plans to create an app for both Android devices and iPhones. Bello says the site is easy to navigate, and offers a range of alcoholic beverages to choose from. Once items are selected and placed in the check-out basket online, the order is sent to both a bike delivery worker, and the liquor store. Bello says orders should arrive within the hour. “It’s straight forward and simple,” he says.

DrinkIn joins the ranks of Drizly, a store-to-door delivery service that was launched last May by three Boston College alumni. Drizly delivers boxes of alcohol to a user’s door, but unlike DrinkIn, they don’t rely on bikes to get the job done.
