Rent Whitey Bulger’s Apartment in California

This 'lovely' two-bedroom abode has a lot of cool features, like places to stash a cache of guns and money.

For a mere $2,950 a month (plus a $22 fee), you could live in the apartment where one of the country’s most infamous mob bosses hid from the FBI for more than 16 years while on the lamb.

That’s right—the yellow crime scene tape has come off, and Whitey Bulger’s former Santa Monica, California, apartment is apparently for rent.

According to a listing posted on Sullivan-Dituri.com—which has since been deleted—apartment 303 at the The Princess Eugenia, where Bulger lived under an alias with longtime girlfriend Catherine Grieg, has been remodeled, repainted, and is now looking to be reoccupied.

Although the agency deleted the listing, Boston got a screenshot of the apartment details before it disappeared from the Internet:

Here’s how the apartment, where investigators found roughly $800,000 in cash and guns hidden in the walls, was described by the rental agency:

Lovely bright two bedroom, two bath apartment in the best location! Walk to everything: beach, Third Street Promenade, Palisades Park. Controlled access building with elevator, gated parking—two spaces provided. Freshly painted unit with a fireplace, dishwasher, stove, microwave, and refrigerator. Laundry room on site, on site manager at the building.

The listing included a series of photos of the interior of the property, but those were lost when the listing was taken down, presumably from a flood of Internet queries about the living space. Luckily, Curbed L.A., which broke the news, managed to grab some of the images, which can be viewed here.

Before it hit the market again, the apartment was in rough shape. Bulger gutted parts of the apartment to jam his valuables inside, and taped up windows with blankets in his bedroom so that light couldn’t come in, and no one could spy on him. The apartment was also cluttered with goods that Grieg had purchased in bulk, to cut back on their spending habits, and limit the amounts of times they would have to make trips to public places in the Santa Monica area.

The rental agency seems to have timed the listing to coincide with the new Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch movie, Black Mass, which is about the former South Boston gangster’s life, and currently filming locally. It’s possible the real estate agents assumed since all eyes are on Boston at the moment, with residents getting fired up about the glamorization of the accused killer, they could maybe move in a nice, quiet couple … who aren’t on the run from the law.
