Two Locals Claim They Broke the Record for Fastest Time Riding Every MBTA Line

Tim Meagher and his buddy Brendan Hurley were on a mission to beat the record for fastest time riding all of the MBTA’s train lines from end-to-end. And after eight hours bouncing between the Red, Orange, Blue, and Green Line trains, they claim that they accomplished just that.

With Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffees in their hands, and Boston Red Sox caps on their heads, Meagher and Hurley set out on their journey early Tuesday morning with one goal in mind: bring another championship crown home to the city.

“We’re doing it because the [current] record holder is British, and we don’t think it’s right that an Englishman holds a Boston record,” said Meagher via Instagram, when the two boarded their first train at Alewife Station in Cambridge just before 7 a.m.

By the late afternoon, a little over seven hours into their journey, Meagher and Hurley completed the last leg of the Green Line system, “a mammoth” three-and-a-half hour trip that left them with roughly an hour and 15 minutes to make it to the end of the Blue Line at Wonderland Station “to break the record and defeat the British.”

By 2:50 p.m., after the final stretch along the Blue Line, they claimed their victory.

Back in November 2013, self-proclaimed transit racer Adham Fisher came over from England and rode the Red, Green, Blue, and Orange lines, to every stop, in 8 hours, 5 minutes, and 16 seconds. Fisher holds multiple records here in the U.S. and in London, having completed similar feats on other metropolitan transit lines as well.

When he finished his run here in Boston, the T gave Fisher a special commendation for completing the task—something no one had done in that short amount of time prior to Meagher and Hurley’s alleged victory. The only previously documented record, according to transit officials, was when a group of MIT students decided to spend a Saturday tackling the multimodal challenge, which took them 12 hours with lunch breaks included.

But as Meagher and Hurley stated, since that attempt was overtaken by Fisher, they wanted the honor to be bestowed upon those who reside here in Boston, and endure the painful commutes on the T everyday.

“We did this for fun, and the previous record holder was a most worthy opponent,” said Hurley, before the alleged champions boarded a train to North Station to grab a slice of pizza.
