Bostonians Have Just Slightly Above-Average Holiday Gift Budgets

The holidays are fast approaching, and I’ll venture a guess that even after this Black Friday, when Americans spent an estimated $10.4 billion, you still haven’t done a lick of shopping. If you live in Newton, chances are good you’ll spend more than your friends in Boston.

Personal finance social network WalletHub calculated the maximum holiday budgets for each of 563 U.S. cities and ranked them accordingly. The national average per-person this year is $805.65, a small increase from $802.45 in 2014. And if you’re receiving anything other than top-tier gifts from your relative in Flower Mound, Texas, it’s time you braced yourself with some nog and made a scene at the next family gathering.

Boston ranked 207th in the list of 563, with an estimated holiday budget of $897. Also representing Massachusetts on the list are Newton (24th, $1,690), Cambridge (43rd, $1,427), Somerville (78th, $1,262), Quincy (114th, $1,114), Framingham (137th, $1,042), Lawrence (466th, $555), Worcester (504th, $476), Springfield (506th, $476), Fall River (516th, $450), Lowell (555th, $193), Brockton (558th, $122), New Bedford (560th, $98).
