Maria Stephanos is back.

The longtime fixture at WFXT takes her talents to the Needham studios of WCVB this week. She’ll be a new anchor on the 11 p.m. newscast. Stephanos will also anchor the station’s new 7 p.m. newscast, as well as a 10 p.m. newscast on sister station MeTV.

“WCVB is my new home, and I couldn’t be prouder to be joining this team of dedicated and talented journalists,” said Stephanos in an statement from WCVB.

Stephanos has deep roots in New England media. Before she was a journalist at WFXT for 18 years, she worked at WJAR-TV in Providence and ran WBUR’s State House bureau on Beacon Hill as a radio reporter. Stephanos left WFXT in September, not long after the station changed ownership groups and editorial direction.

“Similar to many members of our team, Maria was born, raised, and educated in Massachusetts, and she has built an impressive news career right here as well. She knows the territory, the market’s leaders and newsmakers, as well as the less high-profile members of our community who make our region a remarkable place…and they all know her, too. Maria has a proven track record for excellent journalism and being able to tell a story with local insight and understanding, and she is an ideal addition to the NewsCenter 5 team,” said WCVB President Bill Fine in a statement.

Stephanos, a native of Groveland, graduated from Emerson College with a bachelors and masters in communication. She now lives in Foxborough with her family.
