Springfield Is the Fourth Most Dangerous City for Drivers

Boston and Worcester made it into the top 20.

The next time you take a drive around Springfield, make sure to go slow and wear a seatbelt.

According to a new study by NerdWallet, the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame is apparently the fourth most dangerous city for drivers. Detroit came in first on the list, followed by Baton Rouge and Baltimore.

Springfield was the only city to make the top five with a population of less than 200,000 residents. The study found that Springfield averages around 7.1 fatal accidents per 100,000 residents and has the fifth-highest rate for accident likelihood when compared with the national average.

Worcester came in 10th on the most dangerous cities for drivers list, while Boston ranked 16th, just above Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Cary, North Carolina was found to be the safest US city for drivers due its status as having the second-lowest rate of fatal accidents per 100,000 residents. The city was also given high marks when it came to safety from auto-theft as well as motor vehicle larceny.

The NerdWallet study determined its rankings after analyzing the number of car crashes and fatal accidents in almost 200 of the country’s most populous cities, as well as other vehicle-related crimes.

Data on car insurance quotes were analyzed as well.

The average annual car insurance rate for drivers in Springfield is $1,499.33. Worcester drivers have an average rate of $1,381.90, while Boston motorist pay slightly less at $1,381.90 per year.

Detroit had the highest annual insurance rate by a large margin at $5,408.70 per year. Drivers in Cary had the lowest rate at $728.83 per year.
