South Station, the iconic, historic station that has seen generations of commuters pass through its doors, is for sale.

Its owner put the contract for control of the building’s food, retail, and office space went on the market this week. If you want it, you’ll have to dig deep. Experts tell the Globe it could fetch around $100 million.

The sale also comes before the proposed renovation atop the tracks next to the station, which includes a skyscraper, as well as competing proposals: one that would expand capacity at the station, and another that would see an underground link dug between it and North Station.

“South Station is one of the most recognizable buildings in all of Boston,” Coleman Benedict, senior managing director at HFF,  which is listing the property, said in a statement to the Boston Business Journal. “The building effectively serves as the heart of Downtown and a landmark for all who visit.”
