With 108 wins behind them already, this has been a very special season for the Boston Red Sox—their 2018 record is not only the best in Major League Baseball this year, but also the best in franchise history. If you ask the legend Pedro Martinez, he’ll tell you that heading into the playoffs, the Sox look like the team to beat.
“We have all the tools we need to win,” says the Hall of Fame pitcher, who’s now a special assistant pitching coach and a TV studio analyst. “If they play consistent baseball, like they have, we showed that we are the best during the regular season, and hopefully we’ll continue in the postseason.”
Martinez will share his thoughts on TBS during the playoffs. But he is also quite busy getting ready for the upcoming Pedro Martinez Foundation Gala Supporting At-Risk Youth, happening in Boston on Friday, Nov. 2. So it’s a bit of a relief that he and his wife, Carolina, just relocated back to the Boston area. They still have a place in the Dominican Republic, too, near where the Foundation has started construction on a charter school. On track to open in time for the 2019 school year, the school is the foundation’s largest initiative yet to give Dominican children better opportunities.
“We’re really excited to be able to get the best of both places here in the States in Boston and also in the Dominican Republic,” Carolina Martinez says.
When it comes to charity events, it helps that Boston loves Pedro.
“Bostonians support Bostonians, and they all show up for me, so I’m expecting a big crowd of celebrities,” Martinez says, with a smile. Gala attendees can expect to meet Pedro and Carolina, and last year’s event brought out the likes of David Ortiz, Vlad Guerrero, Jason Varitek, Carlos Martinez, Fernando Abad, Luis Severino, and more.
But first, the Red Sox have a few more games to win. “It’s just the matter of time it takes for us to win 11 more wins this postseason, and this team is capable,” Martinez says.
