Though the morning’s forecasts were dreary, spirits remained high at the Boston Marathon this year. As clouds and rain cleared up by mid-morning, runners roared, cried, clasped hands, and kneeled down to kiss the pavement as they crossed the bright yellow finish line.

This year’s race was marked by the close elite men’s finish. Lawrence Cherono of Ethiopia and Lelisa Desisa of Kenya sped down Boylston Street side by side until Cherono stole the lead in his final few strides.

Worknesh Degafa of Ethiopia came in first among the women’s elite racers, with runner-up Edna Kiplagat of Kenya crossing the finish line 42 seconds behind her.

20-year-old American pushrim wheelchair racer Daniel Romanchuk became the youngest winner in Boston Marathon history, with a two minute lead on runner-up Masazumi Soejima of Japan. Women’s pushrim wheelchair winner Manuela Schär of Switzerland, who set the previous course record in 2017, finished strong in 1 hour, 34 minutes and 19 seconds. (See a complete list of winners here.)

Another notable runner made her mark on Boylston St. this Monday: 1979 Boston Marathon champion Joan Benoit Samuelson. At 61 years old, Samuelson finished first in her age group with a race time of 3 hours and 4 minutes.
