European Union

German-born photographer Jessica Backhaus brings her color-soaked images to Robert Klein Gallery this fall. At once playful and purposeful, her work has also been shown at the National Portrait Gallery, in London, and the Martin-Gropius-Bau, in Berlin.

Arts and Crafts

This September, Gallery Naga showcases the work of furniture maker John Cederquist and Somerville photographer Mary Kocol. Cederquist received an Award of Distinction from the Furniture Society in 2010 for his mind-bending structures. Kocol, whose work is in the collections at the MFA and MoMA, presents “Ice Garden,” a study of flowers encased in ice.

Alternate Angles

Husband-and-wife photographers Maggie Taylor and Jerry Uelsmann unveil their first joint Boston exhibition at Lanoue Fine Art this September. Both artists offer a dreamlike take on reality: Uelsmann’s surreal black-and-white images are made by montaging negatives, while Taylor’s haunting imagery is created by digitally layering tintypes and antique toys over hand-drawn scenes.

“She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and the Arab World”

This MFA exhibit, which features approximately 100 photos from 12 female photographers, explores modern Middle Eastern identity in a time of political turmoil.

Lalla Essaydi

Dior Impressions: The Inspiration and Influence of Impressionism at the House of Dior 

This elegant book, which explores the relationship between couture and fine art, showcases Impressionist paintings by Monet and Renoir alongside Dior’s classic designs.

Photographer and author W. Tad Pfeffer explores home building in this historical look at simple summer dwellings.
