Happy belated birthday to Harry Bertoia, the influential Italian furniture designer and artist born 101 years ago on March 10. Famous for his latticed pieces, Bertoia created a collection of grid-like chairs for design firm Knoll in the 1950s. Welded with wire, his innovative forms are undeniably legendary.

Bertoia once said, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.”
