This may sound far-fetched, but it’s true: there are 21 properties on the market in Boston going for less than $200,000.
How is this possible? As you might expect, they’re not the chandelier-filled townhouses of Back Bay—but they’re something. Real estate data firm NeighborhoodX combed through property listings to find these rare, affordable units. The majority of the homes are clustered in Dorchester, with others in West Roxbury, Hyde Park, Mattapan, and Roslindale.
They range from a listing in Hyde Park asking $124,900 to a Mattapan apartment going for $199,900. And to be clear, just because these places are affordable doesn’t mean they’re tiny. The smallest apartment on the list is 417 square feet and asks $169,850. The property claiming the largest space is a 1,538-square-foot artist’s loft. It’s priced at $145,000.
Only one unit is designated as an income-restricted home—459 Columbia Road #1 in Dorchester. At $306 per square foot, it’s actually more expensive than 12 of the properties on the list.
