The Herringbone Rug Highlights the Beauty of Handmade Quality

Christopher Sharp says it’s easy to make cheap contemporary rugs.
But when he and his wife Suzanne founded The Rug Company in London in 1997, they set out to do the opposite. Instead, their goal was to create the most beautiful quality rugs in the world. Almost two decades later, the business employs 2,000 workers who hand-weave each and every rug in Kathmandu, Nepal. The result combines stunning contemporary patterns dreamed up by renowned designers with the ancient craft of rug-making.
The shop’s Herringbone rug by Jonathan Saunders catches the eye in The Rug Company’s newly opened Newbury Street showroom. The rug’s vibrant display of color and pattern easily create a one-of-a-kind room anchor. Made of hand-knotted Tibetan wool, the rug comes in various sizes, and like all of The Rug Company’s pieces, can be customized.
Described as having an “unexpected color palette,” Herringbone’s powder blue, green, and energetic pink accents form an appropriately bright backdrop for the rust-colored framing. The color combination results in a mesmerizing pattern that immediately commands attention.
The Herringbone rug, along with the shop’s extensive collection of designer rugs, oozes priceless quality craftsmanship.
Sharp says The Rug Company’s expansion to Boston feels like it’s overdue, but is thrilled to have a storefront in New England.
“It’s obviously a great market, an intelligent market,” he says, highlighting the city’s impressive design community. “I think it’s going to be a massive hit.”
