When it was built in 1898, the Oakland Recreational Hall was a hangout for employees of the Oakland Worsted Company, a Rhode Island textile business. Today, the two-story brick building, with its monumental staircase and arched entryway, is for sale as an eye-catching multi-family home.

Situated in Oakland, a village of Burrillville, RI, the former recreational hall asserts a commanding presence from the street—and that’s no accident. In an effort to create a town for its mill workers, the Oakland Worsted Company built the recreational hall, as well as paved the village’s streets, installed fire hydrants and street lights, and built mill houses. Less than a century later, in 1987, the entire village of Oakland was listed on the National Register of Historic Places—and a description of the historic district calls the recreational hall “one of the most unusual and finest buildings of its type in the state.”

The building is currently divided into a 2,600-square-foot two-bedroom unit, an 800-square-foot two-bedroom unit, and a ground-level studio. The place boasts open-concept living spaces, exposed brick, stunning millwork, beamed ceilings, and a wealth of windows. A custom-built loft houses both bedrooms in the larger unit, plus a sleek bathroom with a walk-in shower and a soaking tub.
