Ask The Expert: How To Create A Gallery Wall
Interior designer Alina Wolhardt shares five pro tips.
Gallery walls can be an effective way to add color and personality to a space while also highlighting some of your favorite things. Here, interior designer Alina Wolhardt—of Boston-based Wolf in Sheep Design—shares five tips for creating one all your own.
CHOOSE A FOCAL POINT
“Pick the main focal piece and build around it. In many cases, it’s more effective to pick one of the larger [items].”
ESTABLISH A THEME
“It’s definitely nice to have a mix, but having a theme helps. It could be a common color that all the pieces have, or mismatched frames.”
ADD 3-D ELEMENTS
“Not all artwork needs to be a printed piece or painting. [Try] adding a wall sculpture, a clock, or something that can bring more diversity, such as a wall plant.”
FOLLOW YOUR GUT
“At the end of the day, it’s your wall and you should have pieces that you love!”
EMBRACE EXPERIMENTATION
“Think of your gallery wall as fluid: You can always change your pieces, add as you go, and move things around. Don’t be scared to make a mistake. It’s just a small nail hole that can always be patched up.”
