Either-Or: A Waterfront Cape Escape vs. a Bay Village Townhouse

The Kennedys have one, as do the Bushes. And for $788 per square foot, another New England clan now has its own family compound. The relatively low sticker price on this 1900 Bourne estate can be attributed to its condition: Even with a stunning period butler’s pantry and wood-burning fireplaces, it was in need of a few updates. But the barn, tennis court, deep-water dock (a highly desirable amenity for yacht owners), and boathouse—all situated on 2 seaside acres with plenty of yard to play in—more than made up for the shaggy interior.

Compare that with this townhouse smack dab in the middle of the city. Around the same age as the Cape compound, the Bay Village abode was gut-renovated in 2016 to open up the floor plan and update the kitchen. With just three bedrooms, it sleeps considerably fewer cousins, but the small deck off the living room, top-floor den, and huge skylights in its vaulted ceilings make it more than roomy enough to host them for game night.
