The only place you’ll find a house that looks like this one is in Rhode Island. Called a “stone-ender,” the style of home is unique to the Ocean State—colonists built them by dedicating one wall entirely to a stone chimney. That’s thanks to Rhode Island’s abundance of limestone, and the resourcefulness of early New Englanders.

This peach-painted stone-ender dates back to 1680, and claims the title of the oldest house in Newport. It was built by the son-in-law of Governor Benedict Arnold, a Quaker named John Bliss. The place retains a host of original details, like wide-pine floorboards, a wood-burning fireplace, exposed beams, and a hearth in the dining room. There are plenty of modern comforts, too, like a brand-new kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances and updated bathrooms. Outside, there’s a good-sized backyard with a stone patio and a pergola.
