720 West Road, Richmond
Size: 4,228 square feet
Far from the clamor of an MBTA commute or the din of rush hour traffic, this remarkable dwelling sits at the westernmost edge of Massachusetts. And while it’s anchored to the ground, the Berkshire County home seems to be above it all—large tree trunks and branches populate the interior, making it feel like a supersized treehouse.
Vermont-based architect David Sellers designed the structure to bring some of the surrounding 150 acres of nature into the home itself. He accomplished that vision not only through massive windows in almost every room—the entire wall stretching from the living room to the library is made up of glass squares—but through scavenging the literal land for building materials. Take the statement fireplace in the living room, which is made of stones collected from the yard, as are several balconies.
In the open-concept dining hall, bark-covered trunks act as posts and verdant forest views are visible through the windows. A stone archway opens into the kitchen, adding another touch of masonry to the wood-loving house.
One of the home’s neatest moments is the tree trunk-lined alley that leads from the living room to the cozy sunken library, which looks like you’re like walking down a woodland path to a magically book-filled clearing. Trees appear in a less-whole form throughout the rest of the three-story “treehouse,” too, from maple cabinets to pine floors. For those who can’t get enough of nature and are a child at heart, this creative habitat should be the perfect find.
