On the Market: A Botanical Victorian in Cambridge
A solarium, pergola-covered deck, and lush gardens grace this Queen Anne, located in Robert Frost's old "Brewster Village" stomping grounds.
6 Riedesel Ave., Cambridge
Size: 3,418 square feet
Just off Brewster Street, this delightful Victorian is in the midst of what Robert Frost once called “Brewster Village,” the tree-lined residential block that served as his home for 20 years until his passing in 1963. Located between Brattle and Brewster, Riedesel is the short avenue that this Queen Anne calls home.
Inside the 1887 construction, Douglas fir floors and shades of pale green and purple make the home look like an indoor garden. In the dining room, periwinkle walls are punctuated by a fireplace (one of five in the 10-room house) with a brick surround painted in a mossy green. Through the doorway, a petite solarium with tiled floors escalates the botanic scheme: A mural covers the purple walls, showing leafy vines growing out of a terracotta pot and stretching up to the ceiling, forming a painted canopy over the sliding glass doors that lead out to a pergola-covered deck. The mural isn’t just a pretty tease, though—step down from the veranda, and you’ll find a shady oasis of lush green plantings.
But if the windchill is keeping you indoors, you might want to turn back around and make a beeline for arguably the most luxurious room in the house. The library, a first-floor alcove lined with alternating windows and floor-to-ceilings bookcases, is the perfect spot to get into a new novel, enjoy a nightcap, or tap out a tune on the piano (as the current homeowners have done).
Up on the third floor, a huge room measures almost 30 feet long and 19 feet wide. Use the space as a crafting studio, a home office, or a fitness center. If you can’t decide, there’s probably room enough for all of the above.
