The Problem

All stocked with wine but nowhere for it to go: That was the dilemma for the owners of this Newton residence, who had a 1,000-plus-bottle collection they hoped to find a home for during a significant renovation.

The Solution

After building an addition off the back to expand the home’s lower level, the Boston-based firm Touloukian Touloukian set out to create a modern, comfortable entertaining space with a climate-controlled wine room that would provide storage while serving as a focal point. “The display is as much about art as it is function,” says president Theodore Touloukian, who worked with Signature Custom Wine Cellars of New England to build the showpiece. Across from the cellar, the team incorporated a quartz wet bar for sipping and swirling under the mahogany ceiling, which ties in with the home’s exterior door frames. The overall look: simple and sleek. “[We used an] elegant, neutral palette that allowed the space to become a backdrop for the wine display itself,” Touloukian explains.
