Now that April has finally, miraculously arrived, going for a walk along the beach and rinsing those sandy feet off in the ocean sounds markedly more appetizing than it did a day or two ago. Luckily, this Newburyport pad is located right across the street from the beach—yet across the mouth of the Merrimack River from busy Salisbury Beach, and a few miles away from Plum Island and Newbury Beach. Summer may still be a few bends around the river, but we’d take a tranquil piece of beachfront over a packed boardwalk any day.

Across the road, the yard surrounding this home is filled with granite-lined flower beds, perennial blooms, brick pavers, and little grass to mow. There’s even a tiny wood-shingled garden shed designed to look like a classic clam shack. The house shares that same nautical atmosphere, with ample windows bringing in beautiful river views, all-white walls and beamed ceilings, wide pine floors from the 1800s, and accents of distressed shiplap in certain rooms.

But there’s also a heavy dash of eclectic decor that makes the dwelling feel seasonally appropriate all year long. There are the green glass pendants that illuminate the soapstone counters and open shelving in the kitchen, and the stained glass light fixture above a built-in banquette and its tiled platform. In the living room, a gas fireplace plugs into a brick wall, framed on either side by lots of bookshelves. It’s a style that balances between vintage, modern, and beachy. Take the first-floor bathroom, for instance, where marble basketweave tiling covers the floors and continues into the glass shower, a stained glass window lets in some diffused natural light, and oddly shaped cabinets carve out some storage space around the brick chimney. Actually, cleverly concealed cupboards are hidden in several spots throughout the home—check underneath the stairs and on either side of the sitting room fireplace—it’s just one of the perks of living in a home with 19th century bones, but accents and updates as fresh as an ocean breeze.
